At Rajut Asa, we specialize in creating sustainable clothing using natural fibers such as ramie, raw cotton, and pineapple fiber. Our brand combines tradition and innovation by utilizing Alat Tenun Bukan Mesin (ATBM), a hand-weaving technique passed down through generations of local artisans in Pasuruan. Each piece of fabric is meticulously handwoven, reflecting the beauty of Indonesian culture and the dedication of our craftsmen.
Our primary materials, pineapple fiber and ramie, are sourced from local farmers. Pineapple fiber is extracted from leaves cultivated by farmers in Pasuruan, while ramie is grown in Wonosobo. By using these natural and biodegradable materials, we aim to support local farming communities and reduce environmental impact. Rajut Asa serves as a bridge between culture, nature, and sustainable innovation.
The ATBM Weaving Process at Rajut Asa Studio
The creation of our handwoven fabrics begins with the intricate Alat Tenun Bukan Mesin (ATBM) process, ensuring every piece is a true testament to the art of traditional weaving.
Â
Thread Preparation (Pemaletan)

The process starts with transferring raw cotton threads from bundles to spools using a spinning tool. The threads must be precisely wound to prevent tangling and to ensure smooth weaving. The threads are centered on the spools to facilitate easy withdrawal during weaving.
Plangkan Process
 Â

Threads from the spools are arranged diagonally, from the top left to the bottom right, depending on the width, length, and comb density of the fabric to be made. This stage ensures the threads are aligned correctly, forming the base for the desired fabric structure.
Â
Sekiran Process

The threads are wound from spools onto a large drum (tambur) in a parallel arrangement, layer by layer. This step determines the motif and requires careful attention to thread count, color patterns, and tension. Any broken threads are immediately repaired to prevent inconsistencies in the fabric.
Thread Transfer to Small Drums

Â
Threading the Loom

Each thread from the small drum is passed through the eyelets of the loom's heddles and the comb. This process involves aligning approximately 2,000 threads to create a single fabric panel, which typically measures about 65 cm in width.
Â
Weaving
Â
The actual weaving process begins, involving 6 hours of meticulous work for a single panel. Designs with multicolored threads may require additional time.
Â
Final Touches

After weaving, the fabric undergoes finishing touches to ensure the texture, pattern, and overall quality meet the highest standards.
At Rajut Asa Studio, each piece of fabric is crafted with care, precision, and respect for Indonesian cultural heritage. Our ATBM weaving process not only preserves traditional techniques but also ensures the production of premium-quality fabrics that represent the richness of Indonesian craftsmanship.
